Lake Wanaka is one of the best places to visit in New Zealand and the lone tree that has grown in the lake is probably New Zealand's most famous tree #thatwanakatree (along with Tane Mahuta)! The beauty of the tree in the lake with the incredible backdrop of the surrounding Southern Alps is a precious memory for travellers to this remote part of the world.
As a child, my brothers and I would climb the tree every summer - long before it became famous and way too precious to climb upon! This part of the lake is close to our family home where my parents still live today so I enjoy having a sense of history with this place and I love to take my children for a walk down through the Wanaka Station Park to play in the lake beside that iconic Wanaka tree. It's always amazing to see that so many visitors to Wanaka want to connect with nature at this beautiful place.
I wanted to capture this image of the Wanaka tree in a modern way and I've used a palette of greens and blues with a touch of the pink we so often see on the mountains in the distance surrounding Lake Wanaka.
